Meetings:

Meetings are held every second Saturday of the month at the Centurion Library. Meeting from 13h00. Please note as form January 2007 Fort Schanskop is no longer used.

HISTORY:

The club was established in 1984 and was 20 years old in 2004. IPMS Pretoria has a proud history of promoting plastic modelling and caring for its members. On the 1st December 2001 IPMS Pretoria re-launched itself with a new strategic plan to promote plastic modelling in South Africa. Membership growth, model supplier partnerships and fun modelling events were set as objectives. The year 2002 will be remembered as the most eventful year of IPMS Pretoria regarding its activities for the members. We are the most active and fastest growing model club in the country and the following was achieved:

  • Model Displays at two Air shows at the SAAF Museum, the Hobby-X at the Dome@ Northgate, a Hobby Fair at John Voster High School and at the annual Pretoria Boys High Pipe Band Competition.
  • A field trip to the Armour Museum in Bloemfontein was definite the highlight of 2002.
  • Membership increased to 100 members with +/- 35 members attending monthly meetings.

REGIONAL CLUB EVENTS:

Modelling Disciplines: We are proud to announce that our club caters for the following modelling disciplines:

  • Plastic Modelling. As our core business, this is the most popular of our activities and the recent Africa Militaire has proved once again the high standard of our models. Our youth and ladies modellers membership are increasing as well. Workshops, demonstrations and clinics are presented on a regular basis. The building of scale wooden ships (Artesania Latania) is included as part of modelling.
  • Wargaming. This is a fast growing special interest group in our club. Building and painting wargaming figures and vehicles is a plastic modelling discipline. Many of our members are Games Workshop wargamers as well. We welcome wargamers to our club as a mechanism to disseminate information to them. The introduction of the new Wizkids game is spreading like wild fire.
  • Military Model Railroading. This is another fast growing special interest group in our club. Building military trains, scenery and dioramas that depict historical battles is very relevant to plastic modelling. One of our club members Johan de Villiers, has his own modular train layout "Niedlingen". Many of our members now have a collection of military trains and are also busy with their World War 2 train modules. Members of the N Gauge Guild are also members of IPMS Pretoria.
  • SANDF Modelling and Wargaming. Policy in the Department of Defence has been promulgated to make our hobby, as defined above, an official recreational activity. Plans are under way to supply the soldiers deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi with kits to build and wargames to play as part of their recreation.
  • Siyandiza. The Chief of the SA Air Force has appointed International Plastic Model Society of South Africa (IPMS SA) as the official model building facilitators for Project Siyandiza. We are honoured to be part of aviation awareness amongst our promising youth. Siyandiza means "we are flying" and has as goal the identification of future men and woman for aviation careers. The project is specifically focused on the previously disadvantaged youth. Siyandiza consists of Aviation Modelling and each IPMS branch in the regions is responsible for liasing with their regional Siyandiza Project Officer to support the project. This enables IPMS access to Air Shows and to facilitate model building. The kids, who build the best models, will qualify for flips in aircraft. Events and business plans must be planned together in the IPMS regions with the project officers. Honorary Members: All our model suppliers are honorary members of IPMS Pretoria and since last year we started to invite them to all our activities. We are proud of our association with the suppliers and our relationship with our suppliers has improved tremendously the past year and the cooperation benefited the growth of the hobby.
