Page 5 of 9 | Book | ISBN | Remark | | 0-9583880-2-4 | "AT-6 Harvard in South African Service" - A pictorial history by D. Becker & W. Brent. The SAAF was for many years the largest user of the venerable Harvard and also used this aircraft in the training role for the longest period. It has been said that if a pilot could fly a Harvard competently, would find more advanced aircraft less intimidating, as he would have a thorough grounding in airmanship. Perhaps this is the reason why the SAAF pilots are regarded as among the best available anywhere, as many of the old hands started out on the Harvard. This book cover the Harvard as used by the SAAF with a large number of black & white photos, some colour, interesting snippets, history and a list of almost every Harvard flown by the SAAF. A detailed section on colours & markings and some info for modellers are included. Order the book direct from the author -

. | | 0-9583880-4-0 | "Canberra in Southern Africa Service" - M. Hamence & W. Brent. This book cover an interesting aircraft and the role that it played in two small air forces, the Rhodesian Air Force and the SAAF. The techniques developed to use this aircraft to the best of it's abilities are quite remarkable to say the least. A very interesting read and a valuable resource for the modeller. . | | 9-780947-478476 | "75 Years On Wings of Eagles" - D. Becker. A very well balanced history of the SAAF covered in a single volume. This book does not claim to be an in depth history volume, but instead highlight the various areas in which the SAAF served. In most cases very well illustrated with photos (mostly colour). This book's biggest advance is the early South African Military history, before WW I and the first two World Wars. SAAF history from it's inception to circa 1995 (SAAF's 75th anniversary) feature in this book. | | 0-620-24116-0 | "Vlamgat" - D. Lord. The story of the Mirage F1 in the SAAF, as told by a former pilot and Sqdn OC. This aircraft was responsible for peace & stability in the Southern Africa region for almost 23 years. A very interesting insight into the world of SAAF fighter pilots. Lots of info on the aircraft's involvement in the Border War conflict. One of the best publications on a single SADF/SANDF subject, due to the comprehensive information contained in the publication. Out of print but a PC CDROM in eBook format should be available soon. | | 0-9583880-6-7 | "African Air Forces" - W. Brent. This book is for the serial number enthusiasts. It must have been a daunting task, to list as much info as possible on all the types of aircraft, in service with the vast number of air forces throughout Africa. All aircraft types of the SAAF are also listed, but the accuracy has been questioned by some publications in regard to the SAAF's serial numbers. Unfortunately a publication such as this is out of date the moment it is published and only current to circa 1998. Some photos (mostly colour) of the types are included. But it is an interesting read to see what were at one time, in service on the African continent - in most cases this is quite surprising. Order the book direct from the author -
