Image 1 86812 528 9 "Chopper Boys - Helicopter Warfare in Africa" - A. Venter. The French were the first to use choppers as gunships and these gunships were first used in Africa. In many of the conflicts throughout Africa the chopper played a key role. These roles included high mobility warfare like trooping, gunships, casevac etc - all of which are covered in detail by the author. Lots of photos, many taken under actual combat conditions. A large section cover the Border War conflict, Rhodesian war and the conflicts in Angola and Mozambique. A very interesting read and highly recommended to anyone interested in these remarkable machines. Out of print.
Image 0-9583880-7-5 "Chopper Pilot, the adventurers & experiences of Monster Wilkens" - Monster Wilkens. This chopper pilot is perhaps the SAAF's most experienced helicopter pilot, with more than 5000 hours. On the Alouette III alone he has more than 3000 hours and just over 900 deck landings with various types. He has flown every SAAF chopper from the Alouette II, Alouette III, Puma, Super Frelon, Wasp to the Rooivalk. A very interesting read and cover SAAF chopper flying like training, open water, rescue including mountain rescue and Border War operations like trooping, gunship, scouting, recce etc. Lots of photos - many were taken by the author. Highly recommended to chopper enthusiasts.
