The South African Air Force (SAAF) as one of the world’s oldest air forces celebrates its 90th anniversary on 1 February 2010. This historic milestone will be celebrated during a special parade on Friday 29 January 2010. Traditionally the last Friday in January is known as “SAAF Day” and on this day the SAAF showcases its military air power. As part of the preparation exercises, which commenced on 27 January 2010, Gripen no 3906 was fitted with two IRIS-T SRAAMs (Short Range Air to Air Missile) as the latest air to air missile of the SAAF.

South Africa is in a joint venture with Brazil to develop an advanced SRAAM which is known as the A-Darter. Although the project is in an advanced stage the missile is not yet operational. For the interim it was announced during 2008, South Africa would acquire the Diehl IRIS-T from Germany to equip its latest Gripen fighter aircraft. This made South Africa only the 2nd export customer after the six IRIS-T partner countries and Austria.

Lt Col Glen Gibson from 2 Squadron was the display pilot of Gripen D no 3906. The aircraft is also fitted with chaff/flare dispensers. This aspect illustrates the fully operational status of the Gripen system in counter air operations.

The annual SAAF Day parade takes place on Friday 29 February 2010 from 10h00 at AFB Swartkop.
