Page 2 of 4 Each year the event grows in popularity and the Artillery Formation takes this into account in the layout of the demonstration area. This year the visitors were placed in very close proximity to the firing line. To afford the lengthy crowd line a good view - the demonstrations were repeated at different areas along the firing line. This change ensured most could follow the small calibre demonstration in full view. As far as the large calibre equipment are concerned their number were almost double compared to the previous year. During his welcome speech Brig Gen M.R. Notshweleka welcomed a special group of women who attended on invitation of the Chief of the SA Army Lt Gen Solly Shoke. It was a great honour for the Artillery to host woman on the day and in particular the special group during their month which end at the end of August. (Woman's Day is celebrated on 11 August). They are not only the builders of the Nation but in recent years the South African Artillery has broken down the walls and nowadays accept woman in the same positions which were previously dominated by men. Many of the personnel showcasing the impressive equipment throughout the day were woman. Interestingly, the Brig General joined his men and woman on the firing line for the large calibre demonstrations. | Small calibre demonstration | Oryx from 17 Sqdn | Browning M1919 |
