Four Artillery Regiment of the SANDF presented their annual open day and fire power capability demonstration on 23 August 2008 near Potchefstroom. Artillery is one of the original components of the combat arms and enjoys an illustrious history with proud traditions. In terms of historic land battles the “Gunners” with their skilful deployment of large calibre weapons have often been the deciding factor for the victors. Some of the world’s most impressive artillery equipment is found in South Africa.

The annual open day at Potchefstroom is one of the highlights on the calendar not only for the Regiment but also for residents of Potchefstroom, members of the “Gunners” Association and military enthusiasts from all over South Africa. To the attending spectators the day never disappoints as 4 Artillery Regiment goes to great lengths to showcase this proud military component with a large number of static artillery and support equipment on display with a live fire power demo.

This year’s open day commenced with an introduction to all the static equipment on display. In the mean time a lone Oryx from 17 Sqdn took off with a team of parachutists followed by the spiral climb to height. Members from 44 Parachute Brigade performed the jump with two of the canopies in a bright red colour with the words “SA Army”. Upon landing they formed up for the salute where they handed over the red & blue Artillery flag to the revue officer, Brig Gen M. R. Notshweleka. In his address he highlighted the theme of the day as being: “Women in Artillery”. As the Artillery is traditionally seen as being male dominated, the SANDF proved women can serve effectively in the Artillery. They serve with great pride across all levels and in every discipline from troop level, to members of the gun equipment team, and even commanders of Artillery equipment and in the command structure of the Artillery.
