In this day and age of all grey colour schemes for air force aircraft, the Cheetah's two tone grey coat was certainly one of the best in terms of the overall look of the aircraft. Above all the aircraft (especially the Cheetah C) just “looked right” in the air. Despite an overall aggressive look, the aircraft has beautiful streamlined lines with everything in the right proportions. There are no overly exaggerated blisters or bulges making its shape very aerodynamic. Its slight nose high attitude while in forward flight will be sadly missed ……

Without the Cheetah the fighter technology gap would have been too great for South Africa. It is thus the ideal building block or stepping stone to the Gripen system.

No official statements were made on the fate of the remaining Cheetahs.

2 Sqdn – the future?

Image Despite having lost their namesake aircraft and the ever changing face of the modern SAAF, the Sqdn as our current premier fighter Sqdn will live on. The Sqdn will soon thunder through the skies while flying the latest fighter technology in the form of the Gripen. The Sqdn served with distinction in many theatres both foreign and domestic and it is these pillars of an illustrious history, which strengthens 2 Sqdn’s position to make Gripen a success.

Sursum Prorsusque!
