With so many aspects on the classified list the ordinary enthusiast will never know the remarkable contribution no 1419 as part of an effective fleet, made to our Air Force. Yet this aircraft as part of the original three delivery aircraft were the only example to experience a few teething problems in the first few years of operational use. These were resolved and were soon serving as a fully qualified operational aircraft. This aircraft was also used for training and given the nature of operations it was rather pointless to place the aircraft in the air for a training sortie of a few hours.

A typical training exercise started with a power climb out of AFB Waterkloof to height followed by a long range navigation flight to Marion Island. After circling Marion Island the 707 was vectored to Port Elizabeth for instrumentation approaches and other exercises. Sometimes the flight was extended to Cape Town for additional instrumentation and other exercises. Flight times varied between 7 to 10 hours. This proved to be very cost effective as a number of training exercises could be conducted by swapping crews during the flight.
