Page 5 of 5 | Close to Bethlehem is a large nature reserve and big cat sanctuary called LionsRock Lodge. This is part of a non-profit orginasation called VierPfoten (www.vier-pfoten.org) dedicated to helping animals in distress around the world through education and support. They have chosen South Africa to hold the big cats rescued from various zoos and other places. The animals are sterilized (to prevent breeding) before being placed into care. |
| They are in the process of finalizing the construction of 5 huge holding pens for the 50 (or so) lions, 1 tiger and 2 leopards they have. There are also some wild dogs (very shy animals) and two Rooikatte (caracal) in the sanctuary. Upon completion there will be greater comfort for the cats, especially the Tiger and Leopards. | | Not only cats but a large variety of game and birdlife is present on the reserve as well. LionsRock Lodge caters for hiking and biking trails as well as game drives. The hiking trail (on the reverse side of the mountain) has some bushman paintings in the caves for viewing. There is on site accommodation of various sorts including an old sandstone farmhouse suitable for up to 10 people. Well worth a visit when in the area or even just a weekend away from the big smoke. | |
