What started off as a demonstration for the families of the unit members led to the annual Artillery Open Day for the city of Potchefstroom. The SANDF has a very large presence in Potchefstroom of which 4 Artillery Regiment form the largest component as the main artillery regiment in South Africa. This annual open day spread by word of mouth and this year was attended by more than 2000 people from all over South Africa. Many served in the artillery and the open day offered the ideal venue to share in the company of fellow “gunners”.

Despite being late in the morning, a bitterly cold wind was prevailing at Potchefstroom on Saturday 28 July 2007.  The proceedings were opened by an impressive fly-past of a C-130 from 28 Sqdn. On board was a full complement of the parachute brigade. However due to the extreme windy conditions at ground level the mass parachute jump was cancelled in the interest of safety. However two members with bright red square canopies with the wording “SA ARMY” in yellow did make the jump. These two members streamed the New National flag and the Artillery flag. Displaying superior skill both landed in short distance of the VIP area.
