Vampire
Another welcome sight was the Vampire displayed on behalf of the SAAF Museum. Featuring beautiful day-glo orange panels and a distinctive English sound of an era synonym with the initial jet fighter days this aircraft remains a delight to watch. Described as possessing flying characteristics of a gentleman’s aircraft no 277 certainly impressed the crowd with a seemingly effortless display.
The only regular civilian team to display was the Wesbank Wizards and their routine is constantly changing to a visual spectacular display of precision timed sequences. Both ex-fighter pilots, Glen Warden and Neil Trollip opened their two ship routine with a cross take-off run which intersected at show centre. Both aircraft swerved from the centre take off line and while trailing smoke both aircraft pulled up to form the “cross”. This was very popular with the crowd. Larry Beamish also attended to display the Extra 300L sponsored by Internet Solutions in a mind boggling routine. Danie Terblanche attended all the way from Nelspruit and demonstrated a Robinson R-22 to the crowd.

Hawk formation

85 Combat Flying School was represented by a formation of three Hawk Mk 120 LIFT aircraft all the way from AFB Makhado. Interestingly some of the Hawks were fitted with the central line cannon pod. This weapon is currently undergoing integration testing at 85 CFS. Mike Weingartz performed his now familiar polished display in the Impala Mk1 no 479 as a very smooth routine. No wonder he is credited with the highest number of flying hours on the type worldwide.
