Page 2 of 2 The festival saw a couple of new displays flying for the first time in public.
First up were the "Snakes", a formation of 5 Microlight aircraft which gave us a display including cutting the bog roll dropped from a height. Methinks though the breeze must have affected this as most of the roll made it down in one piece. The other new display was Elton Bondi in his Soviet Jeans sponsored Pitts Special. His display of aerobatics at altitude was good to watch visually but not good for photography but his low level straight and level (oh ok, inverted) passes were great. Graham Hall did a good display in his Citrushine Yak 52 and CC Pocock also had a great display in his T-41 with some breathtaking manoeuvres showing the STOL capabilities and low speed handling capabilities of this aircraft off superbly.. He also dropped the parachute team before his show. Scully Levin and Arnie Menigellie had their Academy Brushware Harvards out in the bush for the entertainment of the crowd. As this event is not a full airshow there was plenty of time for the general public to enjoy the tatstes of aviation by taking advantage of the joyrides being offered by Martiens Steyn in his Tiger Moth as well as helicopter flips in a JetRanger.
All in all a great day out in the country (Grobelarsdal is about 2 hours drive from Johannesburg) viewing aircraft. Having tasted the country life the IPMSSA media team will be back next year for a repeat. Opening photo: C. Hugo, photo manipulation: A.Dyason All photos: C. Hugo & F. Hugo. |
