Page 1 of 2 The KitsKits with SAAF decals included:Hasegawa P51D Korea has a 2 Squadron SAAF option included. The colour of the orange of the roundel is a little too red for most tastes. Looking at period colour photos it does appear as if the Orange in the roundel is far more red in appearance than expected but not as red as the supplied decals. The Models:1/72nd Scale Hasegawa P51D Mustang MkIV
![]() Authors completed model of a SAAF Mustang P51D Many years ago there was an aero magazine in South Africa called ….. Included in some of the issues (I have 3 or 4) were scale drawings as well as info on SAAF aircraft by Ian Noakes. I used this article as reference for my first SAAF Mustang. I used the original Hasegawa kit and painted her in standard RAF colours of Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Gray underside. The tail tip was painted white in accordance with 5 squadron’s standard practice.
What I should have done was to change the oil breather plate from the standard holed version to the louvre plate as used on P51Ks. The National markings were Hasgawa RAF decals with airbrushed orange centres. The code letters and serial numbers were made up from various Superscale and Modeldecal sheets. I hand painted the pilots individual markings. |
