The word “Tempe” in the context of the SADF/SANDF is unique and represents a number of elite units within the South African National Defence Force. Many regard “Tempe” synonym with the elite parachute brigades of South Africa. But is also home to the armour division and mechanised infantry units. Also hosted is the South African Armour Museum as part of the South African School of Armour. All were represented at the Coca Cola Bloemfontein Airshow staged at the Tempe Airfield on 12 August 2006.

This airfield is located on the outskirts of Bloemfontein and is currently privately owned, although it did host a military training flight in the earlier days. Bloemfontein is serviced by an ACSA airport (Bloemfontein Airport is the 3rd largest in SA) and shares the runway with AFB Bloemspruit which is recognised as the “Centre for Helicopter Excellence”. Today, Tempe airfield is perhaps best known as the centre for recreational skydiving in the area and hosts one of the largest clubs in South Africa with full time, internationally rated instructors and their own aircraft specially equipped for skydiving. In addition, a civilian pilot training school and the glider pilots make up the permanent residents of Tempe airfield. This airfield is not manned but operated under the control of Bloemfontein Airport. In recent years Tempe Airfield presented the “Warbirds” show which showcase a number of present and ex-military aircraft. This was again the case in 2006 with SASOL & Wesbank  as the main sponsors with the show organised by the Bloemfontein Flying Club. Additional sponsorship by Coca Cola, South Africa which has a large bottling plant in the city of Bloemfontein.
