The distinctive whine of the Alouette III was heard for the last time at any inland SAAF base as part of a special decommissioning flypast. Formation of eight Alouette III helicopters took off at 14h00 on Friday 30 June 2006, from the 17 Sqdn hard stand to form up for the fly-past. The CAF Lt. Gen. C. Gagiano, members of SAAF HQ, chopper pilots and ground crew from 6 ASU, 87 HFS & 17 Sqdn attended the fly past. First fly-past formation was in the form of an arrow shape and this was followed by an echelon formation before each individual Alouette III broke formation to complete the circuit for a roll-on landing. The helicopters landed in the following sequence 642, 613, 619, 629, 646, 628, 120 and finally 641. Only no 646 featured the day-glo orange panels indicating this particular helicopter was used for sea-rescue. Formation lead was flown by Louter van Wyk. |
