The Cheetahs of 2 sqdn fired air to air missiles at special flares launched from the ground. Missile used by the SAAF for the exercise is the V3S. In addition Cheetahs fitted with training rounds of the V3S went up against the Tornados fitted with training rounds of the Sidewinder AIM 9L. The German AF could not believe the capability of the SAAF fighter aircraft and the proficiency of the SAAF fighter crews in modern fighter techniques - as the Belgium AF, Russian Federation AF, Indian AF and even the mighty United States AF experienced in similar air-air exercises with the SAAF. Various ACM configurations were flown to simulate a number of different scenarios typical of a modern air campaign.

Both the Cheetahs and Tornados flew attack profiles on the frigates of the German Navy which engaged the aggressors with simulated missile firings and simulated close-inn weapons. Speeds and AGL levels at which the aggressors attacked the battle group were breath taking.  Tornados also conducted recce missions over the Indian Ocean at great speed and only 80 meters AGL! Impressive long distance navigation and recce missions included flying to Upington from TFDC not directly over land but around Cape Point and along the West Coast before heading inland towards Upington to refuel. The Tornado can also be fitted with a buddy refuelling pod normally carried on the centre station under the fuselage. Both Tornados and Cheetahs refuelled form the “Tornado Tanker”.  Another interesting exercise was the Tornados tasked with attacking the German vessels and the Cheetahs scrambled from TFDC to intercept the attacking aircraft. Interestingly the air battle was not directed from land BUT from the frigate Hamburg.
