Page 6 of 9 Soviet diesel fumes. | Upon arrival everyone dismounted with our hosts revealing another rare item which took the Convention attendees totally by surprise! A pristine, fully running Soviet T72 main battle tank were reversed out of its holding area. This was followed by an in depth presentation on the type by one of the members of the School of Armour. Various aspects like the different ammunition, drive train and general layout were illustrated and this was once again done out of a modellers perspective. Also included were various notes to the modellers as to where diesel, “soot” and oil stains are common on the T72 and most Soviet equipment.

TTD was used to prove various aspects of modern main battle tank design if indeed suitable for the harsh South African conditions. The TTD was a concept study and will not enter production. Further it is commonly mistaken for the Olifant Mk1B which will also not enter production. Finally the ever popular and highly capable “Rooikat” was presented to the visitors. All presentations included aspects of scale modelling including what to look out for when building the item in scale. Concepts of modern main battle tank design were also illustrated.
