Heavy metal alley. | As any armour or SANDF enthusiast knows this area also hosts the South African Armour Museum of rare and unique armour vehicles which dates from the Second World War, the Border War to the present day. Driving down the entrance lane various large scale heavy metal items line the access road and for the historian or armour enthusiast this caused instantaneous excitement. As most discovered over the next few days, this is not all the museum offer as there are a large number of rare and unique items scattered throughout the School of Armour and 1 SA Tank Regiment area. This also includes the Letsakeng display hall. Not only South African items are on display but a large number of Soviet items like the T62, T55 tanks etc. are on display. Condition of the items including the Soviet tanks & vehicles are very good despite being displayed in the open. Many have been painstakingly restored e.g. a T34 in original Soviet WW II markings. A number of the prototypes used in development work for South African armour and infantry vehicles also form part of the display. | T34 restored to WWII markings. | Prototype vehicle | T62. |
