The annual Rand Airshow was staged on Sunday 15 May 2005 and as per previous years a large number of activities catered for various visitors of different age groups. The flee market type stalls offered a variety of goods for sale and many vendors offered goods to the aviation community. As SAA’s first Boeing 747 (Lebombo) is now on permanent static exhibit at Rand Airport, the aircraft was accessible to the general public to view the passenger decks and enormous cargo hold. All the flying display aircraft was neatly spaced in a static aircraft park.

R25 entry fee - very reasonable.
But the main aspect of the day was the actual airshow which were entirely civilian orientated. No SAAF military aircraft took part. However the civilian aircraft showed with incredible routines that they can certainly hold their own to stage a visually spectacular airshow to the observers on the ground. Surprisingly the opening of the airshow was probably one of the busiest routines staged in the last few years. No less than 20 aircraft performed various formation fly pasts and individual fly pasts. From a photography point of view, unfortunately the weather did not attend the party and a cloud base would remain throughout the day. At times a chilly breeze also indicated that we are currently experiencing “winter” in South Africa.
