Page 6 of 16 Denel Aviation Cheetah C no 370 - "VLAGGIE"
Cheetah C no. 370 was specially painted in the colours of the new South African Flag for the inauguration of President Thabo Mbeki on 5 April 1999. The aircraft was painted virtually over night by 2 Squadron, after the original intended aircraft being declared not airworthy before the event. It is still painted in this colour scheme and operational with 2 Sqdn. The aircraft retains its multi-role capability. It was the second alternative colour scheme applied to a Cheetah C aircraft. The shark mouth and eyes were at a later date applied to the aircraft's green coloured, centreline auxiliary fuel tank. The aircraft is normally referred to as "Vlaggie" - direct translation from Afrikaans would be "small flag".
Very popular with the crowd - Vlaggie at AAD 04. | Credited with 2 F16 kills of the Belgium AF in ACM exercises. |
