The last home of the Impala until the type's retirement in November 2005. No. 85 ADFS was formed on August 1, 1972 by renaming the Advanced Flying School, Pietersburg. The unit took over some of the last remaining Vampire FB Mk52s and T Mk55s, but by 1973 was completely re-equipped with Impala Mkls and Mirage IIIDZs. With the delivery of Mirage Fl CZs to No.3 Squadron during 1975, 85 ADF took over that unit's Mirage IIIEZs as well as new IIID2Zs. A Sabre Mk6 flight was formed the following year and later 'Impala' Mklls were added to the unit's inventory. The Sabre Mk6s were withdrawn in April 1980 leaving 85 ADFS operating Mrage lllDZs, D2Zs, IIIEZs and Impala Mkls and IIs in the advanced jet training role. The sqdn moved from AFB Pietersburg to Hoedspruit in November 1992. This was the last Squadron to use the remaining 'Impala' MkI & MkIIs until the type's retirement in November 2005. The Squadron will complete the final movement to AFB Makhado in January 2006. Currently the Hawk Mk 120 LIFT is undergoing integration testing with the Squadron and will be the main type operated by the Squadron.
