ImageA new ejection seat was made from the etched metal cockpit set. This makes a nice replica of the original ejection seat. Many Sabres, including the Norwegian examples, were retrfitted with Martin Baker ejection seats. I originally planned to model one of these, using a white metal seat from Aeroclub, but I just could not put the Eduard seat away. So, I had to look through my Sabre decals and photos again and finally chose a new colour scheme for my model, an F-86E Sabre fighter-bomber of No.2 `Flying Cheetah' Squadron of the South African Air Force serving with the United Nations forces in Korea. This aircraft was fitted with the original narrow chord slatted wing.

A new rear bulkhead was added to the cockpit. Also a plasticard support was made and placed in the hole intended for the kit's instrument panel. The etched metal instrument panel was superglued to this addition. Next the etched metal rudder pedals were superglued on top of the plastic pedals. The cockpit was painted interior grey with black panels on the consoles and instrument panel. After the instrument panel was painted, the photographic film was glued to the back side with superglue.

While I was painting the cockpit and waiting for the paint to dry, I started to work on the fuselage. I opened up the port ammunition bay using a sharp knife. The edges of the opening were then cleaned up. On the starboard side I cemented a piece of plasticard to the inside of the forward end of the wing root. Since I now planned to build a Sabre without the 6-3 extended wing, I trimmed the forward part of the fuselage wing leading edge fairing to align with the reduced chord leading edge position and I filled the inside in order to prevent making a hole in the fuselage when I trimmed the wing root.
