Page 2 of 3 Cockpit: | The Eduard cockpit and externals detail set (48 428) is superb, and replaces the basic cockpit internals entirely- what is nice is that most of it is visible after completion, which makes for a change. The Eduard engine details and a number of external fittings refine the kit admirably.
| The kit itself is quite workmanlike and dimensionally adequate. The control surfaces are all separate- which adds a real sense of realism. It’s a nice touch. |
Nose section: | However the kit needs attention, but is worth it- notably the exhaust manifold, which should be cut free of the cowling, the early Vokes tropical filter which needs scratchbuilding (I built it up out of plastic card and carved to the correct profile, hollowed out the intake and inserted the Eduard grille and a couple of obscure photo-etched items), the overly thick canopy (I vacuum moulded a new one). The fixing points of the undercarriage legs are wrong, and will have to be re-worked with some filling and re-scribing.

| The upper wing and the lower plane/fuselage/horizontal stabiliser assembly are airbrushed separately. After the usual dramas of aligning interplane struts and wings and undercarriage, the result was a model that has just the right look and feel of a Gladiator- which in the end is the real test of a kit’s potential. |
